When Do Mosquitoes Come Out?
Understanding when mosquitoes are most active can help you plan outdoor activities and take protective measures at the right times. Mosquito activity is influenced by the time of day, season, temperature, and weather conditions.
Time of Day
Most mosquito species are most active during the hours around dawn and dusk, roughly 30 minutes before and after sunrise and sunset. During these periods, lower wind, cooler temperatures, and higher humidity create ideal conditions for mosquito flight and feeding. However, some species, like the Asian tiger mosquito, are aggressive daytime biters.
Mosquito Season in Central Illinois
In Central Illinois, mosquito season typically runs from late April through October. Mosquito activity usually peaks in June, July, and August when temperatures and humidity are at their highest. The first hard frost in the fall typically ends mosquito season, though some species overwinter in protected areas and emerge again in spring.
Temperature and Activity
Mosquitoes are cold-blooded and their activity is directly influenced by temperature. They become active when temperatures consistently exceed 50 degrees Fahrenheit and are most active between 70 and 85 degrees. At temperatures above 95 degrees, mosquito activity often decreases as many species seek shade and rest during the hottest part of the day.
Weather Conditions
Mosquitoes prefer calm, humid conditions. Wind speeds above 10 miles per hour can make it difficult for mosquitoes to fly, so breezy days tend to bring relief. Rain itself does not increase mosquito activity, but standing water left behind by rain creates breeding habitat for the next generation.
Cloudy vs. Sunny Days
Some mosquito species are more active on cloudy or overcast days, as the reduced sunlight mimics the lower light conditions they prefer. Shade from trees and structures can also extend mosquito activity into periods that would otherwise be too bright.
How to Protect Yourself
Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours when possible. Use EPA-registered repellents when spending time outdoors. Wear long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk. Eliminate standing water around your property to reduce breeding sites.
