What Do Termites Look Like?
Most homeowners have never seen a termite up close, which makes identification challenging. Knowing what termites look like can help you spot an infestation early and take action before significant damage occurs.
Termite Workers
Worker termites make up the majority of a termite colony and are the ones responsible for the damage to your home. They are small (about 1/4 inch long), pale white to creamy colored, and soft-bodied. Workers are blind and avoid light, which is why they are rarely seen unless their tunnels or galleries are disturbed. If you break open a piece of damaged wood and see small, pale insects, you are likely looking at termite workers.
Termite Soldiers
Soldiers defend the colony against predators, primarily ants. They are similar in size to workers but have larger, darker heads with prominent mandibles (jaws). In subterranean termite colonies, soldiers make up a small percentage of the population.
Termite Swarmers (Alates)
Swarmers are the reproductive members of the colony. They are dark brown to black, about 3/8 inch long, and have two pairs of translucent wings that are equal in length. Swarmers emerge from mature colonies, usually in spring, to mate and establish new colonies. They are the termites homeowners are most likely to see, often near windows and light sources.
Termite Queen
The queen is the largest member of the colony and can grow to several inches long in some species. She is rarely seen by homeowners as she remains deep within the colony, continuously producing eggs.
Termites vs. Ants
Termites are frequently confused with ants, especially during swarming season. Key differences include body shape (termites have a broad waist; ants have a narrow, pinched waist), antennae (termites have straight antennae; ants have elbowed antennae), and wings (termite wings are equal in length; ant wings have a larger front pair).
