What Attracts Cockroaches to Your Home?

Cockroaches do not infest homes randomly. They are drawn by specific conditions that provide the resources they need to survive and reproduce. Understanding what attracts cockroaches can help you make your home less inviting to these persistent pests.

Food Sources

Cockroaches are opportunistic feeders that will eat almost anything organic. Crumbs on countertops and floors, dirty dishes left in the sink, grease on stovetops, pet food left out overnight, and unsealed food in the pantry are all magnets for cockroaches. They will also eat less obvious food sources like soap, toothpaste, book bindings, and wallpaper paste.

Moisture

Water is even more critical to cockroaches than food. They are strongly attracted to moisture and can survive weeks without food but only days without water. Leaky faucets, dripping pipes, condensation around windows, pet water bowls, and damp areas in basements and crawl spaces all provide the water cockroaches need.

Warmth and Shelter

Cockroaches are cold-blooded and prefer warm environments. They seek out heated buildings, especially during cooler months. Inside your home, they hide in warm, dark spaces like behind refrigerators, under stoves, inside wall voids, and around hot water heaters.

Clutter

Cockroaches love clutter because it provides hiding spots and nesting material. Stacks of cardboard boxes, piles of newspapers and magazines, cluttered closets, and crowded storage areas all create ideal cockroach habitat.

Entry Points

Cockroaches enter homes through gaps under doors, cracks in foundations, openings around pipes and wiring, and gaps in window and door frames. They can also be introduced through grocery bags, delivery boxes, and secondhand furniture.

Dark, Undisturbed Areas

Cockroaches are nocturnal and prefer areas that are dark and rarely disturbed. The backs of cabinets, inside appliance motors, behind wall plates, and deep within cluttered storage areas are all attractive to cockroaches.
