Types of Cockroaches Found in Homes

Not all cockroaches are the same, and identifying the species in your home is important for effective control. Different cockroach species have different habits, habitats, and treatment requirements. Here are the most common cockroaches found in Central Illinois homes.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach is the most common indoor cockroach species worldwide and the one most frequently found in Central Illinois homes and businesses. These small cockroaches (about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long) are light brown with two dark parallel stripes on the pronotum (the shield-like area behind the head). They prefer warm, humid areas and are most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms.

German cockroaches reproduce extremely fast. A single female can produce thousands of offspring in a year. They are primarily nocturnal, so seeing them during the day usually indicates a severe infestation. German cockroaches are resistant to many over-the-counter insecticides, making professional treatment essential.

American Cockroach

American cockroaches are the largest common cockroach species, reaching up to 2 inches in length. They are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on the pronotum. Often called water bugs or palmetto bugs, they prefer damp environments and are commonly found in basements, crawl spaces, and around drains and sewer connections.

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental cockroaches are dark brown to black, about 1 inch long, and have a shiny appearance. They prefer cool, damp environments and are often found in basements, crawl spaces, and around foundation walls. They are sometimes called water bugs because of their affinity for moist areas. Oriental cockroaches are slower-moving than other species and are considered one of the dirtiest cockroach species.

Brown-Banded Cockroach

Brown-banded cockroaches are small (about 1/2 inch long) and named for the light brown bands across their wings and abdomen. Unlike German cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches prefer drier, warmer environments and can be found throughout the home, including bedrooms, living rooms, and behind picture frames and wall decorations.
