Signs of Mice in Your Walls

Mice frequently nest inside wall cavities, where they are protected from predators and the elements while remaining close to food sources. Because they are out of sight, wall-dwelling mice can go undetected for weeks or months. Here are the telltale signs that mice have taken up residence in your walls.

Scratching and Scurrying Sounds

The most common sign of mice in walls is hearing them. Mice are most active at night, so you may hear scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds coming from inside walls, particularly in the evening and early morning hours. These sounds may move from one location to another as mice travel through wall cavities.

Droppings Along Baseboards

Even when nesting in walls, mice leave the wall cavities to forage for food. You may find droppings along baseboards, behind furniture, in kitchen cabinets, and in other areas where mice travel between their nesting sites and food sources.

Grease Marks and Rub Marks

Mice have oily fur that leaves dark smudges on surfaces they frequently touch. Look for grease marks along baseboards, around small holes in walls, and on surfaces near suspected entry points. These marks indicate established mouse travel routes.

Gnaw Marks

Mice gnaw constantly to keep their teeth worn down. You may find gnaw marks on baseboards, door frames, food packaging, and electrical wiring. Gnaw marks near small holes in walls are a strong indicator that mice are entering and exiting wall cavities.

Musty Odor

A persistent, musty, ammonia-like smell can indicate a mouse infestation, particularly if mice have been nesting in your walls for some time. This odor comes from mouse urine and is often strongest in enclosed spaces like cabinets and closets near the infested walls.

Nesting Material

Finding shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or other soft materials in unusual locations may indicate that mice are collecting nesting material. Mice build nests in wall cavities using whatever soft materials they can find.
