Mouse Droppings Identification Guide
Finding droppings in your home is one of the most reliable indicators of a rodent problem. Knowing how to identify mouse droppings can help you confirm an infestation and take action quickly. Here is what you need to know.
What Do Mouse Droppings Look Like?
Mouse droppings are small, dark pellets about 3 to 6 millimeters long (roughly the size of a grain of rice). They are typically dark brown or black when fresh and become lighter and more brittle as they age. Fresh droppings have a soft, moist texture, while older droppings are dry and crumbly.
Mouse droppings have pointed ends, which can help distinguish them from rat droppings, which are larger (about 12 to 18 millimeters) with blunt ends.
Where to Find Mouse Droppings
Mice leave droppings along their travel routes and near food sources and nesting sites. Common areas to find mouse droppings include kitchen cabinets and drawers, pantry shelves, under sinks, behind appliances, in closets and storage areas, along baseboards, and in attics and basements. A single mouse produces 50 to 75 droppings per day, so even a small infestation leaves a significant amount of evidence.
Mouse Droppings vs. Other Pest Droppings
It is important to distinguish mouse droppings from those of other pests. Rat droppings are significantly larger than mouse droppings. Cockroach droppings look like small, dark specks or coffee grounds and lack the pellet shape. Bat droppings (guano) are similar in size to mouse droppings but tend to accumulate in piles below roosting areas and crumble easily, often containing insect fragments.
Health Risks of Mouse Droppings
Mouse droppings can carry harmful bacteria and viruses, including hantavirus, salmonella, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. It is important to handle droppings carefully and avoid sweeping or vacuuming them dry, which can release airborne particles.
How to Clean Up Mouse Droppings Safely
Wear rubber or latex gloves and a mask. Spray the droppings with a disinfectant solution or a mixture of bleach and water (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and let it soak for at least 5 minutes. Wipe up the droppings with paper towels and dispose of them in a sealed plastic bag. Disinfect the surrounding area thoroughly. Wash your hands after removing gloves.
