Fire Ant vs. Red Ant: What Is the Difference?

The terms "fire ant" and "red ant" are often used interchangeably, which can lead to confusion. While fire ants are indeed reddish in color, not every red-colored ant is a fire ant. Understanding the differences can help you assess the risk and take appropriate action.

What Are Fire Ants?

Fire ants belong to the genus Solenopsis and are known for their aggressive behavior and painful stings. The red imported fire ant is the most well-known species and is primarily found in the southern United States. Fire ants build large mound-shaped nests in open areas and will aggressively swarm and sting anything that disturbs their mound.

While fire ants are not commonly established in Central Illinois, climate changes and transportation of infested materials can occasionally introduce them to new areas. Their stings cause a burning sensation followed by itchy, white-topped pustules.

What Are Red Ants?

"Red ant" is a general term that can refer to any ant species with a reddish color. In Central Illinois, this often means red pavement ants, thatching ants, or other native species that happen to be reddish-brown. These ants may bite or sting, but they are generally far less aggressive than true fire ants.

Key Differences

Fire ants are distinguished by their aggressive swarming behavior when their mound is disturbed, their distinctive mound-shaped nests with no visible entrance hole on top, and the painful stings that produce pustules. Red-colored native ants typically build less conspicuous nests, are less aggressive, and their bites cause less severe reactions.

Ant Identification Matters

Proper identification is important because different ant species require different control approaches. What looks like a fire ant infestation might be a different species entirely, and the treatment strategies can vary significantly.
