Do Earwigs Bite?
Earwigs are one of the most misunderstood insects found in Central Illinois homes. With their intimidating pincers and the persistent myth that they crawl into ears, earwigs have a worse reputation than they deserve. But do they actually bite?
Earwigs Do Not Typically Bite
Earwigs do not bite in the traditional sense. They do not have mouthparts designed for biting humans and are not interested in feeding on people. However, if handled or threatened, an earwig may pinch with its cerci, the pair of forceps-like pincers at the end of its abdomen. This pinch is usually mild and rarely breaks the skin.
Are Earwig Pinches Dangerous?
Earwig pinches are not dangerous. They do not inject venom, and the pinch from most earwig species is too weak to cause any significant pain or injury. If an earwig does manage to pinch hard enough to break the skin, clean the area with soap and water to prevent infection, just as you would with any minor skin break.
Do Earwigs Crawl in Your Ears?
Despite the name, earwigs do not seek out human ears. This is a longstanding myth with no basis in fact. Earwigs prefer dark, damp environments like garden mulch, under stones, and in basement corners. They have no interest in crawling into anyone's ears.
Why Are Earwigs in My House?
Earwigs enter homes seeking moisture and shelter, particularly during dry or hot weather. They are most commonly found in basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens. They may also enter through gaps around doors, windows, and foundation cracks. Earwigs are nocturnal and are usually found hiding in dark, damp areas during the day.
How to Prevent Earwigs
Reduce moisture around your home by fixing leaky pipes and improving drainage. Remove mulch, leaf litter, and other organic debris from your foundation area. Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows. Reduce outdoor lighting near entrances, as earwigs are attracted to light.
