Dangerous Spiders in Illinois
Illinois is home to hundreds of spider species, but only a handful pose any real danger to humans. Understanding which spiders are potentially dangerous and how to identify them can help you stay safe and know when to seek medical attention.
Brown Recluse Spider
The brown recluse is the most medically significant spider in Illinois. It is found throughout Central and Southern Illinois and is well-established in our service area. Brown recluses are tan to dark brown with a distinctive violin-shaped marking on their cephalothorax. They have six eyes arranged in three pairs, unlike most spiders which have eight.
Brown recluses prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, attics, basements, and storage boxes. They are not aggressive but will bite if accidentally pressed against skin, such as when putting on stored clothing or reaching into boxes. Bites can range from mild to severe, with some causing necrotic wounds that require medical treatment.
Black Widow Spider
The northern black widow can be found in Illinois, though it is less common than the brown recluse in our area. Female black widows are shiny black with a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. They build messy, irregular webs in sheltered outdoor areas like woodpiles, sheds, and under eaves.
Black widow venom is neurotoxic and can cause significant pain, muscle cramps, and other systemic symptoms. While fatalities are rare, bites should receive prompt medical attention, especially for children and the elderly.
Yellow Sac Spider
Yellow sac spiders are small, pale yellow to light green spiders that build silken sacs in the upper corners of rooms and along ceilings. They are more common indoor spiders than many people realize and are responsible for a significant number of spider bites in Illinois. Their bites can cause local pain, redness, and swelling, but they are not considered medically dangerous.
How to Reduce Spider Risk
Keep your home clutter-free, especially in storage areas. Shake out clothing and shoes before putting them on. Seal cracks and gaps around your home's exterior. Use sticky traps to monitor spider activity. Wear gloves when handling stored boxes, firewood, and outdoor items.
