Common Winter Pests in Central Illinois

Common Winter Pests in Central Illinois

While many people assume that pest problems disappear during the winter months, the truth is that cold weather drives many pests indoors. Central Illinois winters are harsh, and your warm, sheltered home becomes an attractive refuge for a variety of unwelcome guests.

Mice and Rats

Rodents are the number one winter pest concern for homeowners. Mice and rats move indoors in the fall and remain active throughout the winter, nesting in wall voids, attics, and basements. They can cause significant damage by gnawing on wires, insulation, and stored items, and they contaminate food and surfaces with their droppings.

Spiders

Spiders that entered your home in the fall continue to be active during winter, especially in undisturbed areas like basements, closets, and storage rooms. Brown recluse spiders may be found in boxes, shoes, and clothing that have not been disturbed for a while.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches are a year-round indoor pest that thrives in the warmth and moisture found in kitchens and bathrooms. Winter does not slow down cockroach activity indoors, and populations can grow quickly if left unchecked.

Overwintering Pests

Stink bugs, Asian lady beetles, and box elder bugs that entered your home in the fall typically remain dormant in wall voids and attic spaces during winter. On warm winter days, they may become active and appear inside your living spaces, especially around windows.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are not affected by outdoor temperatures because they live entirely indoors. Winter is actually a common time for bed bug discoveries, as people spend more time inside and holiday travel can introduce bed bugs to new locations.

Winter Pest Prevention

Keep your home sealed against rodent entry, address moisture issues that attract cockroaches, and store food in airtight containers. Check holiday decorations and storage items for signs of pest activity before bringing them into your living areas. Regular inspections by a professional can catch problems early.
